SUMMARY:KULeuven Course: PCB Design and Layout Techniques for Cost-Effective SI\, PI and EMC\, in 2015
DESCRIPTION:The research group ReMI (Reliability in Mechatronics and ICT) organizes a course on basics and advanced PCB design and layout techniques. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvery two years\, on average\, every type of semiconductor that is available on the market goes through a die-shrink\, which makes their emissions and immunity worse. This applies to older device types\, like 74-series TTL and HCMOS\, as well as to the latest microprocessors and memories\, so designing with the same old parts does not protect us from this problem. So PCB technology must continually advance\, to design PCBs in a way that doesn’t create problems for Signal Integrity (SI)\, Power Integrity (PI) and ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC). Advanced PCB EMC techniques are generally needed when resonances in PCB structures are excited by the frequencies present in the analogue\, digital or power supply current waveforms. After the appropriate choice of semiconductors (or designing your own ASICs)\, the most cost-effective SI\, PI and EMC techniques are those applied at the PCB level. This course provides a practical grounding in PCB EMC design and layout techniques that have been proven over many years in real life to help companies quickly improve their commercial and financial performance by: \n\n\n\n\nBringing products to market more quickly\n\n\n\nImproving functional performance\n\n\n\nReducing overall unit manufacturing costs\n\n\n\nEasily complying with legal EMC requirements\n\n\n\nReducing warranty costs and improving customer perception of the brand\n\n\n\nReducing financial risks\n\n\n\nImproving Return On Investment\n\n\n\n\nAgenda:  \n\n\n\nDay 1: \n\n\n\n\nThe scope of these layout techniques\n\n\n\nSaving time and money\n\n\n\nSegregation\n\n\n\nInterface analysis\, filtering\, and suppression\n\n\n\n0V and power planes\n\n\n\nPCB-chassis bonding\n\n\n\nPower supply decoupling\n\n\n\nSwitch-mode power converter layout (AC-DC\, DC-DC\, etc.)\n\n\n\nTransmission line techniques\n\n\n\nLayer stacking\n\n\n\nDevices with BGA packages and/or multiple DC rails\n\n\n\nSome useful references and sources\n\n\n\n\nDay 2: \n\n\n\n\nWhen should we use advanced PCB techniques?\n\n\n\nFuture trends and their implications\n\n\n\nRules of thumb\, approximations\, simulations\n\n\n\nVirtual design for SI\, PI and EMC\n\n\n\nAdvanced segregation techniques\n\n\n\nPCB-level shielding up to GHz\n\n\n\nAdvanced interface filtering and suppression\n\n\n\nAdvanced PCB-chassis bonding\n\n\n\nAdvanced PCB planes\n\n\n\nThe totally shielded PCB assembly\n\n\n\nAdvanced PCB decoupling\n\n\n\n\nParticipation fee:€750 (excl. SUMMARY:KULeuven Course: Electromagnetic Compatibility - Mysteries Unraveled
DESCRIPTION:This course is open to all people with an interest in electronics and EMC or people who have been confronted with EMC issues. Profound knowledge is not necessary but a basic knowledge in electronics is desirable. \n\n\n\n\n\nSolving Electromagnetic compatibility problems is still seen as “black magic” by engineers involved in the design process of electronic products. Nevertheless\, many problems can be avoided and/or solved when a couple of basic principles are understood and used. In this course Prof. Davy Pissoort teaches engineers who are regularly confronted to EMC problems how to use these basic principles and this without any complex mathematics nor theories. The emphasis of this course is on the practical application of these basic principles. This course is divided into four seperate modules on four seperate days: \n\n\n\n\nModule 1 (07/10/2015) : Introduction in EMC\, European guidelines\, normatives and CE marking\n\nWhat is EMC?\n\n\n\nWhat are EM-fields?\n\n\n\nEMC and CE marking\n\n\n\nEMC assessment\n\n\n\nEMC directives and measuring methods\n\n\n\n\n\nModule 2 (14/10/2015) : Basics of EMC\n\nFive fundamental EMC terms\n\nFrequency domain vs. time domain\n\n\n\nNon-intentional antennas\n\n\n\nCommon mode and differential mode\n\n\n\nInterconnection impedance\n\n\n\nEquipotential design\n\n\n\n\n\nPossible ways of coupling\n\n\n\n\n\nModule 3 (21/10/2015) : Rules for good EMC craftsmanship\n\nHF “ground” connections for EMC\n\n\n\nGood EMC craftmanship for cables and connectors\n\n\n\nEMC filters\n\n\n\nEMC shielding\n\n\n\n\n\nModule 4 (28/10/2015) : How to use simulations for EMC problems and a practical DEMO\n\n\n\n\nParticipation fee:€600 (excl. VAT) for all modules\, free book “EMC Design Techniques for Electronic Engineers by K. Armstrong” included!€200 (excl. VAT) per moduleIn combination with the course “PCB Design and Layout Techniques for cost-effective SI\,PI and EMC\, in 2015” a total price of €1200 (excl. SUMMARY:FMTC Workshop: Reliability Estimation of Physically inspired Models (Relimod)
DESCRIPTION:Program \n\n\n\n\n\nPhysically inspired models are a useful means for designing better machines and vehicles. They allow for a faster control design and verification of the correct operation of the machine/vehicle through virtual tests. But how can we incorporate the different behavior of multiple machines of the same type in a single model? Or how can we rely on a model\, if we do not know to what extent its behavior deviates from reality? For example\, what guarantee do we have that a model-based control design will produce the expected performance on the actual machine? Or in an end-of-line test\, can we use a model to evaluate whether the observed machine behavior is within acceptable tolerances? So an understanding of the reliability of the model and its parameters is necessary. In the Relimod project\, an approach is developed and demonstrated that allows quantifying the reliability (uncertainty) of the output of physically inspired models and their parameters based on a certain set of experiments performed on a realization of the mechatronic system. \n\n\n\n\n\n13:00 Welcome & Introduction\, Wim Symens\, Technical director at FMTC13:10 A systematic integrated methodology to increase safety and reliability of mechatronic systems\, Bey-Temsamani Abdel\, Project manager at FMTC13:30 Invited speaker: Model-based functional safety concept for an EV (Electric Vehicle) use case\, Bert Dexters\, Account Manager at Flanders’ DRIVE14:00 Enhanced functional reliability prediction\, Kristof Boerjan\, Team leader at Televic Rail14:30 Coffee pause15:00 Invited speaker: Feedback on FIDES (reliability prediction) method application in French military programs\, Denis Tourtelier\, Expert on electronics reliability\, Attached to the French Ministry of Defense15:45 Accelerated life testing and reliability\, Vital Driesen\, Business development manager at Jabil Circuit Belgium16:15 Towards a model-based functional safety verification and validation\, Bjorn Aelvoet\, Project leader embedded systems and functional safety at Spicer off-highway product group16:45 Concluding session & Network drink  \n\n\n\nLocation: FMTC\, Celestijnenlaan 300\, 3001 Heverlee

SUMMARY:FMTC Workshop: Functional Safety Validation - Challenges and Innovative Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Safety is of increasing importance in industrial environments. The international standard EN-IEC-61508 defines the requirements for the functional safety circuits and the procedure for performing a safety assessment. This procedure consists of 3 steps: hazard and risk analysis\, safety function definition and SIL (Safety Integrity Level) validation. In the validation process\, reliability quantification of parts used in safety instrumented systems is required. In the VAL4SIL project different techniques for reliability quantification have been investigated. Based on this investigation a systematic integrated process for quantifying system’s reliability and validating SIL for safety function is developed.Program \n\n\n\n\n\n13:00 Welcome & Introduction\, Wim Symens\, Technical director at FMTC13:10 A systematic integrated methodology to increase safety and reliability of mechatronic systems\, Bey-Temsamani Abdel\, Project manager at FMTC13:30 Invited speaker: Model-based functional safety concept for an EV (Electric Vehicle) use case\, Bert Dexters\, Account Manager at Flanders’ DRIVE14:00 Enhanced functional reliability prediction\, Kristof Boerjan\, Team leader at Televic Rail14:30 Coffee pause15:00 Invited speaker: Feedback on FIDES (reliability prediction) method application in French military programs\, Denis Tourtelier\, Expert on electronics reliability\, Attached to the French Ministry of Defense15:45 Accelerated life testing and reliability\, Vital Driesen\, Business development manager at Jabil Circuit Belgium16:15 Towards a model-based functional safety verification and validation\, Bjorn Aelvoet\, Project leader embedded systems and functional safety at Spicer off-highway product group16:45 Concluding session & Network drink  \n\n\n\nLocation: FMTC\, Celestijnenlaan 300\, 3001 Heverlee

SUMMARY:EMC@Flanders seminar: From nano (IC) to mega (installations)
DESCRIPTION:In order to avoid extra delays and costs\, EMC issues have to be searched for\, investigated and solved at every stage of the design process and at every level (ICs\, PCBs\, modules\, systems\,…). Moreover\, legal EMC requirements are becoming more stringent as they will not only ask to show compliance at the moment of placing on the market\, but also to give evidence that EMC will be maintained during the whole lifetime of the product.Within the KU Leuven\, a long history exists on identifying\, studying and solving EMC issues at every moment in the design cycle and at every level from IC to system. In this seminar we want to introduce you “EMC@Flanders”\, a partnership of ESAT-MICAS\, ESAT-TELEMIC\, Labo DE NAYER and ReMI-FMEC\, all members of the KU Leuven with complementary expertise related to EMC.

\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n EDM-D-012 Mechanical Integration – V1.2 (2026)\n \n \n \n \n 1 file(s) 2 MB\n \n \n Login to download. \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n14:00 Onthaal & Koffie14:15 Introductie VIS-Prosperita (imec)14:45 Vibration Guidelines (Sirris)15:15 Vibration Tool (Sirris)15:45 Validation Tests (KHBO)16:00 Closure and discussion16:30 Networking drink17:00 Einde \n\n\n\nLocatie: Sirris\, Technologiepark 935\, Zwijnaarde

SUMMARY:6th International ESD Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The 6th International ESD Workshop (IEW) will be held at the Priory Corsendonk\, Oud-Turnhout\, Belgium. Located among century-old forests\, the historic Priory Corsendonk provides the perfect background for engaging discussions about the latest issues confronting the ESD community.his workshop provides a unique environment for envisioning\, developing\, and sharing ESD design and test technology for present and future semiconductor applications. \n\n\n\n\n\nHence\, this year’s technical focus is evolution\, organized in three themes: More Moore\, More than Moore\, and Evolution in Standardization and Characterization (Moore’s law describes a long-term trend in the history of computing hardware: the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years). Linked to each subtheme expect high quality invited seminars\, invited talks\, discussion groups (DGs) and special interest groups (SIGs) covering ESD on advancing CMOS beyond the silicon roadmap\, the relation between EMC and ESD\, EOS\, and System Level ESD.The technical program includes advances in system level and high voltage ESD\, as well as studies of component protection ESD testing\, case studies\, and design of ESD protections. An expanded poster format provides an opportunity for deep technical discussions and networking. As an added highlight\, Wednesday afternoon is left free for exploration of the local area\, extended technical discussions\, sports\, or relaxation. This exciting and well balanced program was put together specifically to address the needs and interests of those working in the field of ESD and for the benefit of their companies. Both attendees and their organizations gain from this investment in learning. \n\n\n\nLocation: Priorij Corsendonck\, Corsendonck 5\, 2360 Oud-Turnhout

SUMMARY:Software Aided Design - KHBO
DESCRIPTION:Often\, design engineers apply rigorously a set of design rules\, based on earlier experience\, in the design of their new electronics products. However\, due to increasing speeds in digital applications\, new technologies\, compacter designs\, higher safety and reliability demands and the increasing application of electronics in harsh environments\, the design engineer is often confronted with issues that cannot easily be accounted for anymore without in-depth physical insight. \n\n\n\n\n\nTo tackle these problems\, simulations can help the design engineer to gain more insight in the real behaviour of a new design. Simulations can be used for different design areas\, such as the electromagnetic\, thermal and dynamic behaviour of the electronics\, avoiding interdisciplinary problems already in the first prototypes. However\, applying simulations in electronics design is not straight-forward. Design engineers are confronted with a lot of questions. In which detail does one need to model a design? How reliable are the obtained results? Which software tools are available? All these issues and a lot more will be tackled in our workshop on Software Aided Design: Challenges and Opportunities. \n\n\n\n13:00 Reception and coffee13:30 Analysis leads design – Frontleading CAE Simulation in the Mechatronics Engineering Process (Stijn Donders – LMS) 14:20 Practical view on the use of simulations withing TE Connectivity (Lieven Decrock – TE connectivity)15:10 Marriage Proposal Between EM-simulation tools and Lab-Measurements\, is it possible? SUMMARY:The House of Technology - Elektronica: van specialistisch ontwerp tot productie
Often they lack the expertise of how to mix analogue and digital technologies together to make their product more financially lean. This presentation illustrated some simple analogue/digital cost saving ideas for every day industrial applications\, as well as giving a basic overview of DSP algorithm based solutions.  \n\n\n\nOrganisator: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocatie: TBP Electronics\, Geel
