Software Aided Design – KHBO

June 1, 2011 | 1:00 am 7:00 pm CEST

Often, design engineers apply rigorously a set of design rules, based on earlier experience, in the design of their new electronics products. However, due to increasing speeds in digital applications, new technologies, compacter designs, higher safety and reliability demands and the increasing application of electronics in harsh environments, the design engineer is often confronted with issues that cannot easily be accounted for anymore without in-depth physical insight.

To tackle these problems, simulations can help the design engineer to gain more insight in the real behaviour of a new design. Simulations can be used for different design areas, such as the electromagnetic, thermal and dynamic behaviour of the electronics, avoiding interdisciplinary problems already in the first prototypes. However, applying simulations in electronics design is not straight-forward. Design engineers are confronted with a lot of questions. In which detail does one need to model a design? How reliable are the obtained results? Which software tools are available? All these issues and a lot more will be tackled in our workshop on Software Aided Design: Challenges and Opportunities.
